About ‘the shop’

Social science research is instrumental for a flourishing society, but despite our collective investment in science, the same investment has never been made to fully share insights with the public. More recently, educational institutions and the federal government have pulled away from social science research. To face this problem, we formed the Society Workshop.

Society Workshop is a nonprofit social science research and outreach group focused on rapid production and dissemination of social science insights that directly improve the lives of our community partners and create a more knowledgeable public.

Society Workshop will:

I. Produce cutting-edge, rigorous research with direct societal and community implementation benefits

II. Rapidly disseminate social science research insights to communities in the interest of improving lives and creating a knowledgeable and informed public

III. Train the next generation of social science researchers to pursue cutting-edge, rigorous research with societal benefits in a space that is independent of external pressures

IV. Sustain a community of highly trained social scientists who can continue to preserve the methods and practices that produce cutting-edge, rigorous social science research for generations that follow

Society Workshop addresses the persistent need for social science research in public life. The paradigm also advances social science research by focusing on community embeddedness to surface important social problems, and by emphasizing rapid responses to emergent issues where research can benefit decision-making. As well, the focus on training and sustainability ensures that robust social science research will continue even as political winds shift and freedom of inquiry is constrained.
